The Essential Guide to the Perfect "Plandid"

If you're not doing plandids, are you really an instagrammer?

By definition (the Urban Dictionary definition, to be precise), plandid photos is "when you plan to take a photo that is supposed to appear candid."

In other words...

...Not looking at the camera

...Not posed

...Not a selfie

...Oozing those instagram "painfully cool, I just happen to look fabulous in these beautiful places" kinda vibes.

The reality?

Hours of attempting to get the perfect shot, instructing your photographer (aka willing friend, mum or boyfriend) to try "just one more time" and travelling to seek out that perfect coloured wall.

Truth is, if you want your instagram to be above the average feed of nights out and dog pictures, it's time to invest into learning the plandid. The good news is for camera shy and non-models, it's a great way of taking a nice pic but still hiding your face... Sold? Here's how to get started.

1. The Photographer

Pick wisely. It has to someone who actually gets what you're trying to do and understands your need for that "perfectly imperfect" 'gram photo. They must be patient (to put up with your endless need for different takes) and know how to take a basic photo. Pick someone you know well enough that feels confident in telling you when you just look like a complete d***, and whether to move your arm/leg/hair so it doesn't look awkward. Most importantly, once you've found your plandid partner in crime... Keep hold of them and love them forever!

Struggling to find someone? Don't worry, you can always learn the art of the self-timer and invest in a tripod...

2. The Pose

3. The Shoot

Ideally, your photographer should be taking a tonne of photos every minute while you slowly move and shift angles. Burst mode on iPhone works a treat for this! That way you're bound to get at least ONE that looks good, with the right angles and that is still natural looking!

It's official, the plandid is the new selfie - equally self-indulgent but somewhat more sophisticated. It's time to replace those pics of avocado toast and a beaming smile with achingly cool, casually epic shots. The birth of instagram stories and snapchat means the boundaries between perfectly shot and curated instagram feeds and "real life" are becoming more and more blurred... Hence the more "natural" plandid photo taking centre stage of so many feeds over classic posed pictures. If you're doing instagram properly, it's time to start learning the Plandid...

So go on, get out there with your instagram-wife and get snapping!
